When we look at bitterness in the natural it would be something that has a bad taste to our tongue. I want to speak to you today about bitterness, when a person is bitter it is the result of things that they went through in their past. Israel when brought out by God on eagles wings and with an outstretched arm was rejoicing as they left Egypt, but their joy came to a dead end when God led them to the red sea. Pharaoh’s army was pursuing and in their mind they thought that they were in trouble. But God’s plan is never ours until God send in miracles to help us in it.
Complaints department in the house of God is a ministry that’s never been welcomed by God, and here we see the children of Israel complaining at the red sea, not understanding that God was setting them up for victory over an army that vexed them while they were in Egypt. They murmured against Moses for leading them to what seemed like a dead end, but God’s dead end is His way of letting you know that I’m in control trust Me.
After God made a way for them through the red sea, they rejoiced with a song, God’s praises was in their mouth, but three days journey into the wilderness brought them to a river, and as they were thirsty and weary they ran with excitement to drink from the river, with disappointment they vented their anger at God’s servant, complaining that the water is bitter and that they can’t drink from the river.
Three days journey represents the death, burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ, so we need to understand that God send Jesus to cure the waters, which represents our human spirit that is full of bitterness, sin is the cause of people becoming bitter, and sin lives in the heart of people. God told Moses to take a tree and to throw it into the bitter waters, that became sweet. That’s what the cross of Jesus was send into do. The Bible calls it the sweet fellowship of the Holy Spirit, where our spirit is in a relationship with God’s Spirit.
Egypt made them bitter and placed many yokes on them that caused them to respond in they way they responded towards God. But God’s plan was a wilderness that would be used to purify the heart of Israel. So to come out of bitterness we need to receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and through Christ the Spirit will make us be that living water that scripture speak of.
